Peter Singerââ¬â¢s Solution to World Poverty Essay How can we help people in need, and become better human beings? How can it be that we have money for new cars, houses and vacations, but when UNICEF or some other kind of healthcare organization ask us for just 2 dollars, we turn them down right away? In the article ââ¬Å"Solution to world povertyâ⬠Peter Singer gives some of his suggestions on how to help others, and become better persons. Singer tells a story about a man named Bob. Bob just bought himself a new car. The car he bought is one of the most expensive cars you can get. A classic Volkswagen Bugatti. He then has to make a choice. He either has to let his car get destroyed and save the life of a child or save the car and let the child get killed. He chose to save the car. The other story comes from a Brazilian film, a woman called Dora, all she has to leave a homeless nine years old boy to a family that will adopt him in order to make a thousand dollars. Dora delivers the boy into his new family, but she is told that the boy was too old for adoption and he would be killed for organs used in transplantation. To save the boy, Dora decides to take the boy back. In fact Dora would like to save the boy because she has the direct contact with him, but for Bob, he never ever see this kid before, they have no relationship or any contact at all. But what is luxury? Money can be divided into two categories. ââ¬Å"Need to haveâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Nice to haveâ⬠. Food is something you need to have, clothes is something you need to have, but a vacation is just nice to have. ââ¬Å"Nice to have ââ¬Å" is just a luxury. I have just used 300 dollars on a new Xbox, but instead of using 300 dollars on this machine, I could have donated the money to the research of cancer. I would not mind giving the 300 dollars to some kind of healthcare organization, but now when I have the Xbox at my home, I say to myself that ââ¬Å"itââ¬â¢s too lateâ⬠, but in reality itââ¬â¢s not. All I have to do is return the Xbox, and give the money to the organization, but I know I wonââ¬â¢t. Singer uses the stories to let himself into the conscience of his readers. Singer says: ââ¬Å"If you think that is was very wrong of Bob not to throw the switch that would have diverted the train and saved the childââ¬â¢s life, then it is hard to see how you could deny that it is also very wrong not to send money to one of the organizations listed above.â⬠Singer ââ¬Å"blames meâ⬠for delaying the cure of cancer, when I bought that Xbox, instead of donating the money. Iââ¬â¢m sure that the most of people, who have read this article, would think about the subject ââ¬Å"donatingâ⬠without doing anything more than think about it. Singers article is provoking, and you feel bad after you have read it, and maybe thatââ¬â¢s the thing we need. What about people, how would it affect them? Most people might become more humane. The concept of donating would be difficult for the first couple of years, but slowly the public would start to get use to donating. After a few generations, it would be a part of the everyday life, around the world. Singer writes: ââ¬Å"But he was not unlucky at all. We are all in that situation.â⬠Singer is referring to the choice Bob had to make. Singer means that we all have to choose between life or death. Luxury or healthcare. If Peter Singers plan were to actually work, the amount of lives saved would be enormous. By donating the money that would otherwise would go to luxuries, organizations such as UNICEF would send the money overseas to the people who need it. With that money, they could buy food, water, and get roofs above their heads and many other products that are considered to be necessary . There is one problem, however: how much of the money donated would actually reach the people it was intended for? Some organizations take a percentage of the donated money to cover administrative costs. I have talked to a member of Green Peace, and he could not tell me how much of the money that was donated, actually goes to the area that needs it. If only one third of the donated money goes to the troubled area, itââ¬â¢s no wonder why the results is in so slow progress.

Bob Dole: A Race to the Top People understand they can't get all these tax cuts, protect their favorite programs, and balance the budget," says Susan Tanaka speaking on the promises made by presidential candidate Bob Dole to the American public (Gibbs 1996). Bob Dole proposed his tax cut package on Aug. 5, 1996 hoping to entice the public into voting for him in the 1996 presidential elections. Dole focuses his proposal towards social conservatives and supply siders believing he will give them their link to growth-oriented tax cuts which will amount to 551 billion dollars over the next six years (Rubin 1996). So how does Bob Dole plan to make all these things happen without remaining in office for at least 12 years? He does not, it is merely an impossible act in a desperate attempt to get himself elected. As a tradition, the "Grand old Party" has always benefited the rich more than the middle and working class people of America. Bob Dole promises a plan which will avoid business tax cuts and combine a marginal rate cut with a $500 per child tax credit, targeted towards low and middle income tax payers. The result, a plan that while still benefiting the rich more than the middle class, more evenly distributes between all income groups (Duffy 1996). Under Dole's tax cut plan, a family of four with an annual income of 31,000 would see their tax bill drop from $2,000 to $800, a difference of $1,200. "The way the tax cut was packaged shows that they were still sensitive to the old anti-Reagan argument that tax cuts just benefit the rich and they tried to show that their plan would benefit everybody," remarked Rick Grafmeyer, a tax partner at Earnest & Young, a national accounting firm (Barnes, 1996, 29). While Dole flaunts the benefits of his tax-cut proposal, he fails to mention what will suffer in order to activate his tax cuts. First of all, Dole made no mention of how his tax-cut proposal will pay for the $551 billion reduction in taxes. Secondly, Dole does not say that he needs to cut spending in "small" areas such as Medicare, student loans, defense spending and social security. (Gibbs, 1996) Even if Dole plans to leave these things out of the cut, that still leaves 30% of the budget to absorb the cost of the tax cut. Professor Alan Aurbach, of the Universit... ...ncing his tax-cut package and using his other strengths such as his experience in Washington. The worst case scenario would be that he looses the support of his supply-siders, which would not make much difference because he has not gotten that much more than grief from them anyway. In short, it is a tragedy that Dole has sold his soul to win the election, and now he won't end up with either. Dole likes to call himself an agent of change and says that President Cinton is only a defender of the status quo. This seems to upset the traditional views of both parties and reverses the roles. President Clinton proposes only minor tax cuts and specifies payment through minor spending cuts and other revenues while still protecting Medicare, social security, and other related issues. Between President Clinton's election in 1992 and the present, the national deficit has fallen 60% from 290 billion dollars to around 117 billion dollars (Barnes 1996). The strongest case supported the candidate who best represents the conservative American and also holds true to the Democratic party's tradition, United States President and fellow American, William Jefferson Clinton.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Reason, also known as logic and sensibility, is one's ability to think something through, keeping in mind the consequences of one's actions, while paying attention to all aspects of the problem. In ââ¬ËA Midsummer Night's Dream' Reason is explored against various types of Romantic love, including- Lust, committed love, young love and one sided love. Using examples in the play, it can be both proven and contradicted, that ââ¬ËReason and Love keep little company together'. Hermia and Lysander, the play's young and lustful lovers prove that in ââ¬ËA Midsummer Night's Dream' while love is concerned, reason isn't. At the beginning of the play, the audiences are introduced to ââ¬Å"fair Hermiaâ⬠and her lover Lysander. Hermia wishes to marry Lysander, while her Father Eugeus, wants her ââ¬Å"to marry with Dimitriusâ⬠, another Athenian men. Eugeus' force and commitment to the task of getting Hermia to marry Dimitrius, drives Hermia to desperation â⬠Belike for want of rain, which I could well beteem them from the tempest of my eyes. â⬠Lysander, wanting to marry Hermia, came up with a plan. He plans to go to his ââ¬Å"widow auntâ⬠who lives outside of Athens, where ââ¬Å"There gentle Hermia, May I [Lysander] marry theeâ⬠. Hermia agrees to the plan. This shows that neither Lysander nor Hermia fully comprehend the possible outcomes of their intentions, since running away and getting married without permission can bring to them losing everything- Family, connections, respect and reputation. In their time, these were few of the most important things that a man or a woman can own. Thus Both Lysander and Hermia are willing, without listening to the voice of reason, to give it all up for Love. Moreover, Reason does not keep company in Helena's lust and love full head. Helena, Hermia's best friend, is in love with Dimitrius; however, it is a one-sided love, since Dimitrius is in love with Hermia. Thus Helena is jealous of Hermia, since ââ¬Å"Dimitrius loves your [Hermia's] fairâ⬠. In aim to gain Dimitrius' thanks Helena ââ¬Å"will go tell him of fair Hermia's flightâ⬠, then ââ¬Å"to the woods will he [Dimitrius]â⬠¦ pursue her [Hermia]â⬠. By doing so, Helena clearly ignores her reason, since she thinks only of the attention she will be given by Dimitrius. Otherwise, Helena would have saw that she was, in fact, sacrificing her friendship with Hermia and endangering Hermia's happiness, just for another chance in romance. Yet again Helena looks through her reason, by following Dimitrius into the woods. In the woods, following Lysander and Hermia, Helena is all alone with Dimitrius ââ¬Å"who loves [Helena] notâ⬠. Dimitrius is ââ¬Å"wood within this woodâ⬠since he cannot ââ¬Å"meetâ⬠¦ Hermiaâ⬠. His frustration is increased by Helena who follows him. Dimitrius then threatens Helena to take ââ¬Å"the rich worth of [Helena's] virginityâ⬠something which was most valuable to a woman at the time. In addition he threatens to ââ¬Å"do [Helena] mischief in the woodsâ⬠. Helen in replay says ââ¬Å"Ay, in the temple, in the town, the field, you do me mischiefâ⬠. Thus Helena is abandoning reason, in the name of lust, and love. Additionally, the play reveals the option that even old loving couple can lose their reason. Such is the case of Titania and Oberon- King and queen of the fairies. Titania is married to Oberon, and they both share long committed love. Firstly, the audiences witness a bitter fight between them, where Oberon is ââ¬Å"passing fell and wrathâ⬠, since Titania will not give him â⬠a little changeling boyâ⬠. In revenge, Oberon plots to put Titania under the spell of Love in Idleness. This flower â⬠will make or men or women madly dote upon the next live creature that it seesâ⬠. Oberon, after years of loving Titania, lets his reason drop, and with no sympathy or regards for his ââ¬Å"Queenâ⬠and ââ¬Å"ladyâ⬠, puts her under the spell. Titania, on her part wakes up to fall in lust (under the spell of Love in idleness) with Bottom, who wears a head of an ass. Not only that Titania lost her reason by falling in love with an ass, but also, since she does not question this sudden occurrence. Later on, after the lusty spell have been reversed by Oberon, It is revealed that , while in lust and out of reason Titania ââ¬Å"gaveâ⬠Oberon the changeling child- thus turning her back on her principles to take care of the boy. This shows, that even while in a committed-love relationship, lust can make one abandon his/hers reasoning. On the other hand, it is also showed that even while in love, Theseus uses his reason. Theseus' ââ¬Å"nuptial hour draws on peaceâ⬠, He is to marry Hippolyta, queen of the amazons. It is evident that love exists between the two:â⬠Hippolyta, I woo'd thee with my sword and won thy love doing thee injuryâ⬠¦ ââ¬Å". As the ruler of Athens, one of Theseus' roles is to judge cases that are brought in front of him. As was discussed before, Eugeus brought in front of Theseus the case of Hermia and Lysander. According to the Athenian law, Hermia belongs to Eugeus and he ââ¬Å"may dispose of her, which shall be either to [Dimitrius] or to her deathâ⬠Instead of being over sympatric to Hermia and overruling Eugeus, or in other words, making and irrational decision, Theseus used his reason and introduced a third option for Hermia:â⬠to abjure for ever the society of menâ⬠. It is important to remember that overruling Eugeus is irrational because it would discredit Theseus' leadership since he ignores his own law. Public School System Is Changing Grade Levels - 1330 Words
One of the perks of working in a public school system is changing grade levels. My first year teaching at my school I taught the tenth grade. I have since then moved to teaching the twelfth grade. Many things have changed since my first year. One thing that did not change is my favorite disruptive student. When I looked at my roster for the year, I saw Student X in my class of 30 students. In the tenth grade, this students was loud and always talking at the wrong times. He would argue with students and attempt to argue with me. He would not complete assignments unless it was in season for the sport he plays. Since the tenth grade and a new district technology policy, Student X has gotten worse. In addition to his previous behaviors, Student X is contantly on his phone and uses that to distract others. Many students become annoyed by his behavior and try to get him to stop being a distraction. This usually results in an shouting match. Student X becomes defensive and will use profanit y to insult students and further disrupt the class. At this point, Student X is usually dismissed from the class and is sent to his Assistant Principalââ¬â¢s office. The other students cheer and get back to work, and Student X misses out on more valuable instructional time. Even though he is graduating soon, it is important that Student X learns how to act in a classroom setting. Creating a problem solving method is important to dealing with this student and students like him in the future.
